- Kip get in better shape
- than his competitors who
- trained at sea level, where
- thereΓÇÖs more oxygen. When
- the 1968 Olympics were
- held in Mexico City, Mexico (which is 7,200
- feet above sea level), Kip was thought to have
- an edge.
-
- Kip, however, became ill before the Games.
- Still, he entered the 1,500-meter, 5,000-
- meter, and 10,000-meter runs. In his first
- race, the 10,000, he dropped out near the
- finish. But four days later, he finished second
- in the 5,000 meters. Three days after that, he
- won the 1,500 meters and set an Olympic
- record that wasnΓÇÖt broken until 1984!
